Four Favorite: Foundation

Happy Friday, beauties! I’ve decided I’m going to bring the “four favorite” series back and try to post my four favorites of a particular product or style every Friday.

Today, my product of choice is foundation. I have tried a ton of different brands and finishes. While these are all pretty different, they are the four that I have determined as my top contenders.

1. Tarte Matte Shape Tape $39

This is one that I started using recently and I love it! It comes in 30 shades and is pretty much full coverage. I wear shade “fair light neutral” and like that the matte effect keeps my shine down. It’s got awesome coverage without feeling heavy.

This is a great product to wear if you need all-day makeup. I wore it to two weddings this summer and it stayed on all day and night without getting greasy or melty.

If you haven’t tried it, I would highly recommend it. Worth the price.

2. Clinique Acne Solutions $29

I wear shade “Fresh Alabaster” and I’ve been wearing it since I was 14. This is always the one I go back to, especially if I have a breakout.

If you have oily or combination skin, this is the foundation for you. It contains salicylic acid to fight and prevent acne. This liquid is medium coverage and I like to apply it with a brush as opposed to a beauty blender.

You will hear nothing but great things from me about the entire acne solutions line.

3. Benefit Hello Happy $29

This is a new product that Benefit Cosmetics released this summer. The adorable packaging sold me right off the bat.

I went to Ulta last month in search of a foundation with SPF in it. This one has SPF 15 and came in a teeny tiny little sample so I could test the product without committing. Yes! I tried it out and would definitely purchase the full size.

It is on the lighter side coverage-wise, and almost reminds me of a B.B. cream. I wear shade 2 and definitely recommend applying this one with your hands so you don’t waste any product. It’s super light and a little runny.

3. It Cosmetics Celebration Foundation $35

This is the foundation for all my ladies who love powder. This pressed celebration Foundation is AMAZING. As you can tell by 3/4 of my picks, I love the coverage that comes with a liquid foundation, but this pressed powder rocks!

I wear shade “Fair” and like the applicator sponge that comes with it. Sometimes I will use a brush to lock in my concealer when I don’t need such full coverage.

It contains hydrolyzed collagen for anti-aging, and is great for sensitive skin.

I definitely recommend using a facial mist or setting spray to lock the Celebration Foundation in.

There you have it! My favorite four bases for lasting makeup looks.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. I would love to hear what else you want to see reviewed in my favorite four!

My Daily Skincare Routine

When I left for college my mom wrote me a long note with little tips she thought I could use during my first year away from home.

Among the wisdom and sentiment, there were a few simple skincare lessons that we all should live by:

  1.  ALWAYS take your makeup off before bed
  2.  Moisturize every day

Freshman Leigh tried her best, but sometimes failed, falling asleep with a full face of makeup on, on the futon beside a plate of pizza rolls. It happens.

These two tips are no brainers. We should all be thoroughly cleansing and moisturizing consistently. So, I wanted to share my daily skincare routine with you.

Let’s start in the morning.

Like I’ve mentioned before, I have acne-prone skin. I breakout easily and my skin is pretty sensitive. The ONLY product I have ever used and seen results with is the Rodan + Fields Unblemish line. (Thanks, Kelly fam!)

unblemish

I wake up and go through the four steps of the Unblemish system.

  1. Wash
  2. Tone
  3. Dual Intensive Treatment
  4. SPF Lotion

I then apply the It’s Potent Benefit eye cream under my eyes and put on my makeup.

Once I’m done, I use the Mario Badescu Rose Water Facial Spray to lock in my makeup with a dewy glow and refresh my skin.

facial spray

To moisturize my bod, I’m always up for trying new products, but I don’t think I will ever find a lotion I love more than the Kiehl’s Creme de Corps. It’s so creamy going on but doesn’t feel oily or sticky. It’s worth every penny, I promise.

creme

When I come home, my favorite thing in the whole world is taking off my makeup and putting my sweatpants on.

Like I mentioned in my makeup remover post, I am IN LOVE with the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm. For stubborn or waterproof eye makeup, I use Kiehl’s Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover.

I got a few questions after my makeup remover post about why I don’t use makeup wipes often. There are a few reasons why I am anti-wipes:

  1. I’ve never found any that make my skin actually feel clean
  2. I don’t like pulling at my face (it causes wrinkles)
  3. They never remove ALL of your makeup
  4. They are expensive

Honestly, I just don’t like them. I used them for years, but now that I have tried other products, I won’t go back, unless I’m traveling and can’t check a bag – they are convenient in a pinch.

Once I use Take The Day Off and remove my eye makeup, I use the first three steps of Unblemish.

Now it’s time for my favorite part: nightly moisturizer.

I use Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer and two drops of Dr. Dennis Gross Peptide Oil. The oil is pretty expensive, but it lasts forever and makes a huge difference for anti-aging and brightening. If you haven’t noticed by now, I love Kiehl’s. If you haven’t purchased Kiehl’s products before, I highly recommend you try them out!

The very last step is to apply overnight under eye cream. I like ones that focus on dark circles and brightening, like this one.

About once a week, usually Sunday or Monday night I use a mask, but we might need a whole separate post for that…

I know this is a lot of steps, but you’ve got to take care of the skin you’re in! As we all know, none of this matters if you aren’t staying hydrated and rested!

I’ve tried a ton of products and these are the ones that I have found truly work for me.I would love to hear what you guys do to keep your skin happy and healthy! Share with me in the comments or send me a message on Instagram.

Wishing you all a very happy Self-Care Sunday!

Four Favorites: Makeup Remover Edition

Heavy Duty Makeup Removal

On any given day I wear makeup for an average of about 12 hours. When it’s finally time to clean my face, I don’t want to have to wash four separate times or scrub forever just to get it all off. This product removes all traces of makeup quickly and effectively. The Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm transforms into a silky oil as you massage it into your skin. All you do is rub a dime sized amount all over your face, rinse with warm water and towel dry.

cttdo

In my opinion, this is the BEST makeup remover. Here’s why:

  • It’s fragrance free
  • It doesn’t leave you feeling greasy
  • All the product comes off when you rinse your face and it leaves your skin silky smooth
  • Great for contact lens wearers (like me!)
  • It’s allergy tested and great for sensitive skin

I used to be a makeup wipe only kind of gal, but I will never go back after finding this balm. It has reduced my breakouts and completely removes stubborn mascara and lipstick. It also works as a cleanser so I don’t have to double wash my face. I can’t say enough good things about this product. Everyone needs it.

Makeup Removal and Moisturizer

If you have dry skin, Pond’s Cold Cream is a great alternative to take the day off. I know Pond’s makes everyone think of their grandma’s medicine cabinet, but there’s a reason why it’s been around so long; it works and it’s affordable.

PCC

I will admit, I don’t love the smell, but it does a pretty good job removing makeup and hydrating my skin. The main ingredients are mineral oil which removes makeup and debris from the skin, and beeswax to lock moisture in.  Pick this one up on your next Target run and avoid dry skin this winter.

On-the-Go Removal

You don’t always have the time to wash your face and apply a thousand serums. I find that fully washing my face causes less irritation and removes my makeup more quickly, but for the times I’m in a rush, these do the trick.

nmr

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes are the only drug store brand that don’t make me breakout or feel greasy. I like to keep these in my gym bag to use after class. They’re also great for a quick trip when you can’t haul your entire skincare lineup with you.

For Stubborn Eye Makeup

Last but not least is Kiehl’s Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. I use a sulfur wash that is amazing for acne-prone skin, but it’s also drying. When I wash my face, the delicate skin on my eyelids gets dry and sensitive. This eye makeup remover has the consistency of moisturizer and is very gentle, so it doesn’t irritate my eyelids or contacts. It removes waterproof mascara and the little bottle lasts forever. This combined with take the day off and you are squeaky clean!

I hope you find a product or two from this lists that works for you. If you have any other makeup removers I need to know about, please let me know in the comments!

Wake up and makeup!

3 Steps to Shiny Nails

Having my nails painted is one of those things that makes me feel like I have my life just a little bit more together. I love getting a manicure at the nail salon, but it’s pricey and time consuming.

On one of my weekly trips to Ulta, I stumbled upon the OPI Infinite Shine series. My manicure doesn’t usually last longer than two days, so I figured I would give this “long wear” polish a try.

infin

I was pleasantly surprised by the results and am completely obsessed with the new colors in the line.

Here’s how it works:

Buy the primer and finishing gloss together as a set for under $20. Then, pick any color in the Infinite Shine line and follow three simple steps for long lasting nail color.

  1. Apply one coat of the Infinite Shine Primer
  2. Apply two coats of your favorite Infinite Shine Gel Lacquer
  3. Apply one coat of the Infinite Shine Gloss

This manicure doesn’t last quite as long as gel polish or shellac, but it definitely outdoes standard polish. I have gotten about five to six days without any chips and up to 11 days before removing and reapplying.

Currently, my go-to color is “Chicago Champagne Toast” which is not only the best name ever, but also a beautiful shade of metallic pink. Here are some of my favorites:

I hope you try it out and love it as much as I do! Please tag me in your nail pictures on Instagram, I can’t wait to see which colors you choose.

Easiest Updo Ever!

I wear my hair in a high ponytail almost every day. I like having it out of my face, and I’ve found that wearing it up is the easiest way to keep it looking decent all day.

I stumbled upon a version of this quick updo on Pinterest and tweaked it to make it my own (and easy for people with long hair).

img_1016.jpg

Here’s how to get this look:

  1. Make a low ponytail with a part. Make sure you use an elastic the color of your hair!IMG_1095
  2. Loosen the pony a little and make a hole with your fingers just above the elasticIMG_1111
  3. Flip your hair under and through the top of the holeIMG_1085
  4. Braid your ponytail and secure with a skinny elasticIMG_1077
  5. Roll the braid toward the base of your headIMG_1042
  6. Secure with pins IMG_1059
  7. Pull at sides and front of hair for volume

This look is great for work and out for date night! It is so easy and fancier than your average pony or bun.

I hope you try it out! Please comment or DM me any beauty posts or tutorials you would like to see on the blog.

May your Monday be short and your coffee be strong!

Conceal & Feel Fierce

After my fall lip combinations post, I got a few requests for a concealer and foundation post. I decided it was easiest to do a full complexion post and share all my favorite face makeup products for everyday and glam occasions in one spot!

IMG_0726

When it comes to makeup, there are a thousand ways to wear it and even more products to decide between. I have a powder based routine for everyday wear and a more full coverage liquid base for long wear or special occasions.

For reference, I have very sensitive skin. I would say it’s fairly normal, not particularly dry or oily, but I do get some dry patches in the cold months.

Powder Foundation Routine

This is mostly personal preference, but when I use a powder, I like to apply concealer first and finish off with the powder to lock it in. When I use a liquid foundation, I apply it before I put on concealer.

IMG_0536

So, first off I use Benefit’s Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer in shade no. 01. This is my favorite product of all time. It covers pretty much any blemish out there and it stays on all day.

I like to use the It Smoothing Concealer brush (from this set) or my finger to apply it to any blemishes and red spots.

Next, I use Benefit’s Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer in shade no. 01 on my eyelids and under eyes. It’s a great eye shadow primer and prevents under eye creases. If putting moisturizer on before applying makeup makes your skin look greasy, this product is a great solution.

I finish off concealing with Benefit’s Boi-ing Brightening Concealer in shade no. 01. I apply it under my eyes to cover any dark circles, and on any other parts of my face I want to highlight (most often the bridge of my nose and my chin).

Once I am all concealed, I use the It Cosmetics Airbrush Complexion Perfection brush no. 115 to blend the It Cosmetics Celebration Foundation into my face and neck. I wear shade “light”.

FullSizeRender (1)

I am usually not a fan of powder foundations, but this one is great. It’s mid to full coverage and contains vitamins A, C and E, as well as collagen and aloe. It goes on silky smooth and doesn’t crack. I gave this powder a shot when it was on sale during Ulta’s 21 days of Beauty and will definitely repurchase it.

Liquid Foundation Routine

For special occasions or days when I know I will be out all night or in a lot of pictures, I opt for a liquid foundation to avoid having to reapply.

I start out by using the Urban Decay Optical Blurring brush to blend my Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup (in shade 02) to my entire face and neck.

Clinique’s Acne Solutions has been one of my favorite product lines since high school. I have continued to use it even now that I don’t have very acne-prone skin because of the silky texture and full coverage. This is a great liquid makeup for anyone with sensitive skin!

IMG_0535

After that is on I go through all the concealing steps I mentioned above. Quick recap:

  1. Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer on my blemishes.
  2. Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer on my eyelids and under eyes.
  3. Boi-ing Brightening Concealer under my eyes, on the bridge of my nose and my chin.

(Benefit, I’m waiting on that sponsorship any day now.)

If I know I will have makeup on for a long period of time, or I really want to make sure I look glam all night, I like to apply my Clinique Stay Matte Sheer Pressed Powder shade 02 (stay neutral) as a final step.

And that’s it, LoveLeighs. I know it sounds like a lot, but it takes less than three minutes and gives you a clean base for bronzer and blush.

If you’d like to see any specific beauty posts, videos, tutorials or product reviews, please let me know in the comments! I appreciate all of your feedback!

My Favorite Fall Lip Look

My daily beauty routine is pretty consistent. The one small change that always makes a world of difference is switching up my lip color.

My (rather large) lipstick collection is filled with a variety of shades. I love bright orange and pink hues in the summer and deep reds and maroons in the winter, but the tans and peaches are my favorite shades to flaunt during fall.

There’s something about throwing on a comfy knit sweater, my favorite pair of booties and a glossy nude lip that makes me feel like a pumpkin spice latte-drinking rockstar. The natural colors match perfectly with the earth tones I’m always wearing when the temperature starts to drop.

Here are a couple of my favorite combinations for the perfect fall lip:

The first look is a liner, lipstick and a lip gloss. lip1My MAC lip pencil in the shade Soar is the perfect base for any nude or dark pink lip. It has a creamy texture and is great for overlining and filling in thin lips. I have been using this liner for years and it’s one of my favorites.

After applying my Soar liner, I use Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in shade Morning After from the sheer line.

Side note: Who names these colors? Some of the other shades from this collection are called Anarchy and Phone Call

Anyway, I love Urban Decay’s Vice line in sheer. The lipsticks are creamy and have a super shiny finish. Morning After is a light pink with just the right amount of pigment. Aside from the great texture, the blue undertone makes your teeth look whiter and brighter.

The last product you need for this look is Benefit’s Punch Pop! in Sugar Cookie. This is one of the Ulta exclusive shades and I am completely obsessed with it.

If you are reading this knowing you are going to stick to just wearing a gloss – you need this one. It’s softening, subtle and perfect for fall.

The final look is a pinky nude with an ultra glossy finish that makes your lips pop.

The second combo has a more peachy hue and is great for those of you who have any sort of pigment to your skin, unlike me.

img_0164.jpgI start out with the ModelCo Lip Enhancer Illusion Lip Liner. I received this in a Birchbox a few months ago and will definitely be reordering it soon. This wax pencil comes in one shade and magically defines and enhances any lip color.

Next, I swipe on my Stila Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in shade Patina. The one I have pictured is super old and from Nordstrom Rack (my second home), but the link takes you to the one I have purchased more recently.

This color stays on all day, is hydrating and has deep pigment.

The final look is a rich color that lasts from nine to five.

IMG_0172If you have any suggestions for fall makeup trends you’d like to see, please comment here or DM/email me. I’m always up for a trip to Ulta to spend more money than I planned on!

Wishing you all a happy week filled with glossy lips and strong coffee!

Love, Leigh
